School of Computing Research Team Awarded NSERC Grant
Patrick Martin and his team consisting  of Hossam Hassanein (School of Computing), Mohammad Zulkernine (School of Computing) and Kathryn Brohman (School of Business) have received $480,000 to develop new research into the integration of two emerging technologies: cloud computing and mobile communication networks. As more of the services we use in our daily lives are offered through the Web, consumers’ expectations continue to grow. The next generation of services will be “elastic” in the sense that they will automatically grow and shrink in response to user demand and will be accessible anywhere, anytime from mobile devices.

Queen's TRL at OCE Discovery '11

Queen’s TRL showcased three research projects, at the Ontario Centres of Excellence’s Discovery ‘11 conference in Toronto this past May, Socio Spaces, URoute and Sprouts WSN Platform where featured. Attendance at our booth was high as curious visitors wanted to see all the demos. Socio Spaces is a smart environment that connects to users’ social network profiles to learn their preferences and interests. It then adapts the physical environment, delivering customized services and ambient features to create highly personalized experiences for users. URoute is a smart phone application that utilizes the connectedness of the social networks to locate traffic mishaps, guide vehicles around them and disseminate traffic. Sprouts is a modern WSN platform that utilizes unique service-oriented sensors with an energy-aware architecture in a Zigbee-compliant network.
